Hair Color Correction for When It’s Not Quite Right

Hair Color Correction for When It’s Not Quite Right

At-home hair coloring can be hit-or-miss for a lot of people. Often the color on the box isn’t what ends up on our heads. As a result, we get hair color mistakes that can make us panic.

For instance, maybe you chose a deep chocolate brunette color, only to discover that it has a brassy, orange tone that clashes with your natural coloring. Or maybe you chose a strawberry blonde, hoping to add some warmth to your light hair, only to find that the color reads more red than blonde.

This is the perfect opportunity for hair color correction to come in and save the day. With products like toning shampoos, brighteners, and corrective hair color solutions, you can adjust your hair color to get closer to the shade that you actually wanted.

Fixing Hair Color Mistakes with Color Correction Products

The Problem: Your Color is Prone to Brassiness (It Looks Orangey!)

Brassiness can be a problem for brunettes as well as those with blonde or platinum blonde hair (or if you went from dark to very light hair). This is when the color seems to have an orange sheen – not very attractive.

Fight brassiness with a toning shampoo or treatment. These are purple or blue in color, which helps cool down the orange tones in the hair.  If it looks really orange, try a color-neutralizing gloss.

Finally, to help prevent the brassy tones from reemerging, don’t overdo it with heat styling, and use protecting products when you blow-dry, straighten, or curl your hair.

The Problem: Your Color Turned Out Too Dark

This can happen when you leave the dye on your hair too long. This is a really easy mistake to make when you’re running around finishing chores while your hair is coated with dye for that ubiquitous 10 to 25 minutes.

Usually, you’re not supposed to wash your hair for at least 24 hours after dying, but if the tone is too dark, go ahead and shampoo to lift some of the dye out. A clarifying shampoo can work very well for this. Remember to go back in with a deep conditioning treatment afterward to restore moisture and nourishment.

If you’re blonde and your color is too dark, you can go in with lightening treatments to help refresh the color, remove brassiness, and lighten up highlights.

The Problem: Your Blonde Hair Turned Green After Swimming

Chlorine in pools is the culprit here. The chemical reacts with your hair and leaves you looking like a mermaid (and not in a good way).

Get rid of the seaweed look and restore your color with an after-swimming hair color correction treatment. A good one will lift the green from your hair, remove chemical build-up, and leave your hair looking fresh and feeling soft.

Don’t Panic – Just Use the Right Product

If your hair color mistakes feel like a disaster, take a deep breath and reach for one of these products. Don’t forget to be gentle with your colored hair when you wash/condition/style it, and use products that won’t strip your dye or dry out your locks. Shampoo for colored hair is a must, and deep conditioning treatments are a no-brainer.
