It takes effort and a top-notch skin care routine to achieve healthy skin that naturally glows. But with some regimens taking 12 steps or more, it’s easy to get confused on what is the right skin care order.
At LaLa Daisy, we’ve taken the guesswork out of the age-old question, “How should I order my skin care?” Follow this six-step regimen for youthful, flawless skin.
Step 1: Cleanse
Your face is your palette. Make sure it’s sparkling clean before you apply any product. When it comes to cleansing, there are many different options depending on your skin type.
For sensitive or dry skin, try a soothing milk cleanser such as Cellex-C BetaPlex Gentle Cleansing Milk. For other skin types, try Glo Skin Beauty Essential Cleansing Oil or REN Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser.
It is also important to exfoliate once or twice a week. Exfoliation rids you of the top layer of dead skin cells and can also help remove blackheads. Don’t exfoliate more than twice a week however, as too much can be abrasive.
Bioelements Quick Refiner is a favorite of ours at LaLa Daisy. This gel exfoliator is non-irritating, even for sensitive skin, and also provides an added touch of moisture.
Step 2: Apply Serum
Serums give your skin a boost of nutrients before you seal with a moisturizer. Water based and made of smaller molecules, a serum can penetrate deep into your pores. Depending on your unique concerns, the serum you choose can be targeted for anti-aging properties, vitamin C boosts or extra moisture.
To apply, take a dime size dollop of serum and gently massage into the skin using circular motions. Because these formulations are potent, less is more.
For the best in anti-aging, check out Epionce Intense Defense Serum. This serum heals elasticity and repairs moisture barriers. If your pores feel parched, a serum such as Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Serum can hold 1,000 times its weight in moisture from the air and works wonders for dryness.
Step 3: Dab on Some Eye Cream
The area around your eyes is delicate and needs extra TLC to keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay. The skin in this region is thinner than the rest of your face and is more sensitive to discoloration and puffiness.
After you’ve applied serum, gently dab eye cream all around your eye especially in any creases.
For the best in combating wrinkles, Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM Eye Cream helps restore your eyes to youthful vibrance thanks to a blend of retinol, vitamins C and E as well as caffeine. If you just want an eye cream that offers general protection and prevention, try Bioelements Multi-task Eye Crème
Step 4: Moisturize
If you do nothing else for your skin care routine, moisturizing is the single most important step. A good moisturizer not only holds water in your skin, but it also acts as a protective barrier against harmful elements like pollution.
Contrary to popular misconceptions, moisturizer is suitable for all skin types. It is especially important for those with dry skin, however, for those with oily skin a good moisturizer will decrease the oil production and reduce shine.
As if that weren’t enough, skin that is properly hydrated by applying daily moisturizer tends to be healthier down the road as healthy skin is able to repair itself faster. Slather on the moisturizer for beautiful skin now, and younger looking skin later.
Our hands down favorite moisturizer is GlamGlow Volcasmic Instant Matte Glow. This lightweight, water balm helps control shine while priming and hydrating.
For dry or irritated skin, we love PUR Soak It Up Intense Hydrating Moisturizer. It has soothing aloe vera and lily extract to calm and hydrate.
For an added vitamin C boost, you can’t go wrong with Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Intense Moisturizer.
Step 5: Add Some SPF
Anti-aging products don’t always have to be flashy and expensive. A good sunscreen is your first-line defense against the ravages of UV rays and pollution.
After you’ve applied a nourishing moisturizer, rub a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher into your skin for optimal protection.
Image Skincare Ultimate Protection Moisturizer SPF 50 is our go-to daily sunscreen. The added hydration helps reduce shine and keep skin looking fresh and healthy.
For those with sensitive skin, Glo Skin Beauty Oil Free SPF 40+ Sunscreen keeps skin soft with vitamins B5 and E. It also uses zinc oxide instead of harmful chemicals for UVA and UVB blocking.
If you need to reapply sunscreen over your makeup during the day, Colorscience Loose Mineral Foundation Brush gives you the SPF boost you need while keeping your makeup coverage picture perfect.
Step 6: Foundation
Now that you’ve given your skin a drink and all the nutrients that it needs to stay healthy and vibrant, it’s time for the final step, makeup application.
Foundation can be tricky because the right one depends on the look you’re going for, your skin type and even the weather.
Our favorite full coverage foundation for glamorous nights out is Dermablend Smooth Liquid Camo Concealer. This long-lasting foundation is buildable and even has added moisturizing properties. With a wide selection of shades, Dermablend has a foundation for everyone.
If you’re more a fan of the no-makeup, makeup look, try a tinted moisturizer instead of a full-fledged foundation. Coola Mineral Face Rosiliance BB Cream Tint SPF 30 is a light and airy formula that offers SPF and moisturizer in addition to blemish coverage.
